Explorers Swept in Doubleheader at Winthrop

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle baseball team was swept in a doubleheader at Winthrop on Saturday afternoon, falling 7-3 in the opener and 9-5 in the second game. 

GAME ONE
Trailing 7-0 after eight innings, a walk and four straight singles got the Explorers on the board. Pinch hitters Kevin McGowan and Joe Monzo reach based via a walk and a single respectively.

Pinch hitter Mike Manoogian singled in McGowan and moved to second on an error. Joe Ravert singled in Monzo to make it 7-2. Jared Melone singled following an Ethan Springston strikeout to make it 7-3, but the Eagles were able to get two quick outs to halt the comeback. 

Luke Reilly (L, 0-1) made the start for the Explorers, surrendering five runs (one earned) over 4.1 innings. 

GAME TWO 
The Explorers held a 5-4 lead through six innings in game two before the Eagles scored five runs over their final two at-bats to pull off the comeback. 

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 1st before the Explorers struck for three runs in the 4th. Jared Melone had an RBI single to tie the game before Drew Jarmuz plated two with a two-out double to left.

Winthrop tacked on a run in the bottom of the 4th, but the Explorers answered with two runs in the 6th. Jarmuz knocked an RBI triple to left center followed by a Kevin McGowan RBI single. 

The Eagles, however, scored the game's final seven runs to complete the sweep. Tom Fazzini (L, 0-1) took the loss, surrendering four runs in the 8th inning.
