PHILADELPHIA – The VCU Rams scored twice in the 9th inning to steal a 2-1 victory from La Salle in the series finale at Hank DeVincent Field on Sunday afternoon.
Luke Reilly hurled seven shutout innings in a pitcher's duel with VCU's Michael Dailey while
Drew Jarmuz and
Jared Melone each had a pair of hits for the Explorers.
Jarmuz gave the Explorers a 1-0 lead in the 7th on an RBI single to score
Connor Hinchliffe, who tripled to start the inning. Reilly had just pitched out of a jam in the top of the 7th, recording a fly out then two strikeouts after allowing back-to-back singles to start the frame.
The lefty fanned six in the game without allowing a walk, limiting the Rams to just five hits before turning it over to
Tom Fazzini (L, 0-3) to start the 8th. Fazzini pitched out of trouble in the 8th with an inning-ending double play but couldn't hold VCU down in the 9th.
The righty issued a leadoff walk to Cody Acker, who scored the tying run after a two-base throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt and an RBI single by Matt Davis. Walker Haymaker plated the game-winning run with an RBI groundout.
Sam Donko (S, 14) retired La Salle in order in the 9th. Matt Jamer (W, 5-1) picked up the win with a scoreless 8th inning in relief of Dailey.
The Explorers have a pair of Big 5 games this week before hitting the road for an A-10 series at Massachusetts on Friday. La Salle plays at Penn on Tuesday before visiting the Villanova Wildcats on Wednesday.
