Explorers Grab 7-5 win over VCU

Box Score

RICHMOND-
The La Salle women's lacrosse team grabbed a 7-5 win at VCU thanks to a hat trick from senior Katelyn Fay. The Explorers outscored the Rams 4-2 in the second half to grab the victory.

After going into the half tied at 3-3, the Blue and Gold opened the second half with four straight goals to break open the game. Sophomore Brittany Edwards kicked off the scoring in the second half with a goal at the 20:58 make off an assist from Fay.

Fay then went on to score three straight goals in a stretch of just over eight minutes. A pair of the goals came off assists from Edwards and one assist from sophomore Emily Martin to make things 7-3.

The Rams (2-8, 0-2 A-10) would score a pair of goals in the final 7:38 to cut the lead to 7-5, but they hosts couldn't complete the comeback.

Freshman Sarah Gallagher made her first career start in the goal for La Salle (3-6, 1-1 A-10) and made six saves in the win.

La Salle fell behind early to the conference newcomer VCU, who are in their first season as a varsity program, early in the first half. After sophomore Rachel Ceplo opened the score just over two minutes into the game the Rams scored three straight to grab a 3-1 lead.

The Explorers scored a pair of goals to close out the half and even things up at 3-3 going into the break. Senior Anna Kelly scored off an assist from junior Allee Ilgenfritz before Ilgenfritz scored a goal of her own.

La Salle forced 16 VCU turnovers with senior Abby O'Donnell forcing three on her own. Classmate Ashley Blanton scooped up five ground balls in the win.

The Explorers return to action next weekend as they welcome St. Bonaventure and Saint Joseph's to McCarthy Stadium.
