JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – La Salle junior
Chris Sanders ran the third fastest time in the 800m at the NCAA Quarterfinals on Friday night and has advanced to the NCAA Semifinals at the University of Oregon from June 9-11.
"Chris ran with confidence the last two days," head coach
Tom Peterson said. "He has worked incredibly hard this year and it is great to see his hard work pay off. A school record is always good but to run it under the pressure of an NCAA Championship is impressive."
His time of 1:46.65 broke his own school record of 1:47.78, set earlier this season at Princeton. All three of the fastest 800 times were in Sanders' heat. Brandon McBride of Mississippi State won the heat in 1:44.89, followed by Penn State's Isaiah Harris in 1:46.52.
He becomes the first Explorer to reach the NCAA Semifinals since Alfredo Santana in 2014. Sanders is the ninth Explorer man to reach the NCAA Semifinals and the first in the 800m.
