PHILADELPHIA –La Salle University's
Chris Sanders who earned First Team All-American honors earlier this month at the NCAA Track Championship, has been invited to compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials at historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. Sanders will run the 800 meters on Friday at 7:15 PM Eastern.
"If you asked me at the beginning of the year if Chris would be racing at the US Olympic Trials, I would have said there was a small possibility," La Salle head coach
Tom Peterson said. "It's become clear over the course of this season that the Olympic Trials are exactly were Chris belongs. It's a huge honor for any athlete to compete at their sports Olympic trials, but to be able to compete in your university's uniform is a special experience. Chris has recovered well following the NCAA meet, and his workouts have gone great since. We are excited to get out to Eugene. Chris is itching to compete again."
Sanders had a remarkable spring and early summer, which was highlighted by finishing sixth in the 800m at the NCAA Championship. He became the fifth Explorer to earn First Team All-America honors and the first in the 800m.
He set and broke his own school record several times in the past two months, most recently in the NCAA Semifinal by running a time of 1:46.52.
Sanders has won three straight Atlantic 10 outdoor championships in the 800m and helped the Explorers to three straight 4x800 relay victories at A-10s.
The first round and semifinals on July 2 will not be televised but can be viewed online by
