WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The La Salle women's soccer team dropped a 6-1 decision to the NC State Wolfpack in the 2016 season opener on Friday evening at Spry Stadium.
Freshman
Emily Wilkinson scored her first career goal in the 90
th minute, deflecting a
Deja Davis free kick into the back of the net with 58 seconds left in the game. The Explorers had six shots in the second half after a slow first half but couldn't overcome NC State's early lead.
The Wolfpack got things going with a Jackie Stengel goal in the 14
th minute. La Salle kept the game tight for the next 25 minutes before Rachel Cox made it 2-0 in the 39
th minute.
NC State came out shooting after the break, with Stengel scoring 14 seconds into the half and adding a third goal in the 47
th minute. Cox added another goal in the 84
th minute before Michaella van Maanen struck with two seconds left in regulation.
The Explorers will take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Sunday afternoon at Spry Stadium at 1:30 PM.
