SALEM, W. Va., - The La Salle Men's Water Polo team defeated Monmouth College in the first game of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference Weekend at Salem International University on Saturday morning. The win, an 11-10 overtime thriller, signifies the Explorer's first victory within the MAWPC Conference. Later in the day, the Explorers fell to Washington and Jefferson, 22-13.
In the win,
Joey DeFusco led the team in scoring with four goals, including the game-winner. DeFusco also had a steal in the match.
Jeff Brady, the team's leading scorer headed into the contest, came up big in the overtime period to score a goal and keep the Explorers within reach of the win before DeFusco put it away. Brady also scored one in regulation.
The Explorers led a balanced attack as six players scored at least once.
Alex Pitcher,
Jacob Camacho, and
Robert Wilson each found the back of the net once while Keagan Reilly scored twice. In goal,
Jacob Klingsberg had six saves and
Owain Llewellyn had three.
DeFusco again led the team in Game Two, a seven-goal effort to go along with three kickouts drawn and a steal. Also in the game,
Jeff Brady scored three more and dished out two assists. Pitcher, Reilly, and
Joel Gibson all also scored once. In net, Llewellyn and Klingsberg combined for 15 saves.
Head Coach
Paul Macht and his team return to action tomorrow morning with two more games as they wrap up MAWPC Weekend at Salem International. The 9:00 game against the host, Salem International University, will be available for free live stream.
