PHILADELPHIA - The men's soccer team (6-8-1, 2-4 A-10) picked up a much-needed victory over Saint Joseph's (3-8-4, 1-3-1 A-10) under the lights of McCarthy Stadium on Wednesday night, 4-2. The Explorers and Hawks are both currently vying for a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, amplifying the need for a win.
In the match, the Explorers took a 2-0 lead and then a 3-1 lead and were able to hold off the Hawks' late surge.
Kenny Lassiter, a redshirt senior, scored for La Salle to open the game up. In the seventh minute,
Patrick Murphy chipped a ball ahead to Lassiter to who put past the goalie. 12 minutes later,
Johnny Ciarlante headed another ball past the Hawk keeper for his fourth goal of the season.
The Explorers weren't done yet, scoring their third goal of the half later on with an own goal and taking a 3-1 lead into the break.
In the second half, St. Joe's was able to make it close, scoring a second goal to cut La Salle's lead to one. However, it was Lassiter who struck again in the match's final minutes, sealing the deal. La Salle showed up in the clutch to hang on for the win.
Mark Tobin made three saves in net.
Next up, La Salle will travel across town to face Drexel in a Soccer Six match on Tuesday, October 24 at 7:00 PM.
