PHILADELPHIA - La Salle (7-8-1) secured the 1-0 win over Drexel with
Pat McCarthy's late goal to break the scoreless tie on the road in a non-conference match Tuesday night. With the win, La Salle tied Villanova for the Soccer Six championship as both teams went 2-0 in Soccer Six play this season.
McCarthy's goal, which was assisted by
Hayden Criollo and
Sixtus Akinlosotu, came in the game's 87th minute. If that sounds familiar, that's because McCarthy scored a similar last minute game-winner over George Washington just a few weeks ago. This goal bounced around from header to header in front until it found the back of the net in yet another dramatic game-winner for the Explorers.Â
La Salle's offense dominated the shot category, 20-6. The Explorers also had 10 shots on goal to the Dragons' six.Â
In net,
Mark Tobin was credited with the shutout, making two saves along the way.Â
Head coach
Rob Irvine and the Explorers will hope to carry the momentum into the weekend when they host St. Bonaventure on Saturday night at 7:00 PM for Senior Day. The match is the Explorers' last at home this season and could also carry big postseason implications as both teams currently have two wins in the Atlantic 10.
