BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The La Salle women's basketball team (3-3) held off a late Lehigh (4-3) rally to hang on for a 69-61 victory in the Christmas City Classic title game on Sunday evening at Stabler Arena.
The Explorers led by as many 21 points in the 4
th quarter before a furious Lehigh rally cut the lead to just four points at 65-61 with 1:07 remaining. La Salle then halted the rally, icing the game with free throws while holding the Mountain Hawks scoreless over the final 57 seconds.
La Salle's balanced offensive attack featured three scorers in double figures, paced by 24 points from Amy Griffin. Sofilia Ngwafang added 13 points and four rebounds while Shalina Miller finished just shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Griffin was named Christmas City Classic MVP after averaging 23.0 points over the two games, while Shaquana Edwards earned a spot on the All-Tournament team by averaging 9.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals over the weekend.
La Salle shot a season-best 52.1 percent (25-for-48) from the field in the championship game, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. Ngwafang was perfect on the night, going 5-for-5 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line.
Edwards had another balanced stat line, tallying nine points, seven rebounds and five steals. Adreana Miller chipped in nine points while Deja King had a game-high five assists.
The Explorers return home this week to host another Big 5 rival in Penn on Wednesday night. Tipoff from Tom Gola Arena at TruMark Financial Center is set for 7 p.m.
