PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's basketball team (4-3) rallied from an early deficit to clinch their third straight win, a 66-59 decision against Big 5 rival Penn (2-3) at Tom Gola Arena at TruMark Financial Center on Wednesday night.
The Quakers scored the game's first 11 points, and led 23-10 at the end of the 1
st quarter before the Explorers found their footing early in the 2
nd. La Salle outscored Penn 22-12 in the 2
nd quarter to enter halftime trailing 35-32 before taking the lead for good on a Shaquana Edwards three-pointer with 1:53 to play in the 3
rd.
Edwards led four Explorers in double figures with a career-high 20 points, going 8-for-10 from the field and dishing out six assists. Adrena Miller added 12 points while Amy Griffin and Shalina Miller each chipped in 10.
The Explorers led just 45-44 going into the final stanza before scoring seven unanswered to take a 56-46 lead on a Shalina Miller basket with 5:13 left in regulation. Penn wouldn't let the Explorers run away with the game, even cutting the La Salle lead to five points with just under four minutes to play, but were kept at bay as the Explorers went 4-for-4 from the line in the final minute.
La Salle was efficient shooting the ball across the board on the night, hitting 22 of 45 attempts from the field (55.6%) and going 12-for-15 (80.0%) from the foul line. Both marks are season-highs.
La Salle held a 34-32 rebounding advantage, thanks in part to a game-high nine rebounds from Ashanti Freeland and eight boards by Griffin.
The Explorers are back on the road this weekend as they visit the Wisconsin Badgers at the Kohl Center on Saturday. Tipoff is set for noon (11 a.m. local time).
