KINGSTON, R.I – The La Salle women's basketball team held on to a late lead to earn a 58-49 win over Rhode Island and a sweep of the season series against the Rams on Wednesday night at the Ryan Center.
Although tightly contested during the second half, the Explorers pulled away in the final 1:06 with eight unanswered points. Sofi Ngwafang had six of her season-high 11 points during the late run to go with a season-high six rebounds.
Micahya Owens added a season-high 18 points while
Amy Griffin tallied her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Jas Alston secured a game-high 13 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive glass, while
Ashanti Freeland had 12 rebounds on top of eight points.
The Explorers held a 56-46 advantage on the boards on the night. Thirty five of La Salle's rebounds came on the offensive glass, which the Explorers converted into 26 second-chance points.
Alston also tied a season-high with six steals as the Explorers forced Rhody into 30 turnovers, the most forced turnovers in a single game this season for La Salle. The Explorers scored 28 points off turnovers in the game.
La Salle returns home on Saturday as they host the George Washington Colonials at Tom Gola Arena. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m.
