AMHERST, Mass. – The La Salle women's basketball team (16-11, 9-6 A-10) downed Massachusetts (9-19, 3-12 A-10) 57-52 on Sunday afternoon at the Mullins Center to sweep the season series with the Minutewomen and clinch a home game for the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship.
The Explorers had three scorers in double figures, paced by 17 points from Sofi Ngwafang. The freshman also pulled down a season-high 11 rebounds to record her first double-double of the year.
Anemone Scheel finished with a career-high 13 points and grabbed four rebounds while
Lisa Mintzer matched her career-high with 10 points. Mintzer finished 5-for-8 from the field while Scheel was 5-for-11 from the floor.
Scheel had seven points during a 17-4 La Salle run to close the 2
nd quarter and send the Explorers into halftime up 37-27. The Explorers never relinquished the lead despite a 4
th quarter run from UMass to make it a one-possession game with just over three minutes to play.
Amy Griffin tied her career-high with seven assists and added five points and seven rebounds.
Jasmine Alston tallied nine rebounds and seven assists.
Maggie Mulligan led all scorers with 18 points for UMass and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Ryan Holder and Leah McDerment also finished in double figures, netting 11 points apiece.
The Explorers host Fordham on Wednesday for Senior Day. The Explorers will honor
Jasmine Alston,
Deja Bullock,
Lisa Mintzer and
Micahya Owens in a ceremony before the game.
The Explorers will then host a first round A-10 Championship game at Tom Gola Arena on Saturday, February 25 at noon.
