PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle women's basketball team (16-12, 9-7 A-10) battled Fordham (20-10, 11-5 A-10) through two overtimes but came up short in a 66-61 loss to the Rams on Senior Night at Tom Gola Arena.
Amy Griffin poured in a career-high 37 points, including 21 in the second half, going 18-for-32 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the foul line.
Jasmine Alston added 11 points, eight assists and six rebounds but Fordham proved too much down the stretch.
Griffin had hit a go-ahead jumper to put La Salle in front 52-50 with 13.6 to play in regulation but Fordham's G'mrice Davis tied the game with a jumper at the buzzer to force overtime.
The Explorers took a 56-52 to begin the first overtime period before La Salle was held scoreless over the final 3:46 of the extra period. Fordham's Hannah Missry eventually tied the game at 56-56 with a trey with 19.0 seconds left to force a second overtime.
Fordham jumped out to a 61-56 lead in the second overtime period and didn't allow the Explorers closer than three points for the duration.
Thanks to a new format for the Atlantic 10 Championship, La Salle has clinched a home game for the first round of the tournament. The #6 Explorers will host #11 St. Bonaventure at Tom Gola Arena on Saturday, February 25 at noon. Tickets will be available at the La Salle ticket office beginning Thursday.
