FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason shot an impressive 63.3 percent from the field to earn a 95-75 victory over the La Salle men's basketball team on Saturday night. The loss drops the Explorers to 12-9 overall and 6-4 in Atlantic 10 play.
Hot three-point shooting helped La Salle jump out to a double-digit lead early. Seniors
Cleon Roberts and
Jordan Price each connected on a pair from deep to extend the lead to 21-10 at the 13:25 mark of the first half.
George Mason called a timeout after Price's trifecta and responded with 15 straight points to take the lead at 25-21. Over the next eight minutes, the Patriots grew their lead to as many as 15 points and entered intermission with a 47-35 advantage.
La Salle shot the ball at a 50.0 percent clip but the home team was red hot, shooting 61.5 percent including 6-of-11 from three-point range. Three Patriots reached double figures in the first 20 minutes, including 14 from Marquise Moore.
The second half saw the visitors cut the deficit to single digits on a number of occasions, and a three-pointer from the left corner from junior
Amar Stukes pulled the Explorers to within 66-61 with 9:07 on the clock.
The margin remained five a minute later, when a layup from Jalen Jenkins began an 8-0 spurt by the Patriots as the re-established a double-figure cushion.
A jumper from Stukes at the 4:36 mark nudged La Salle within nine, but a 13-2 run from George Mason closed the contest and helped the Patriots improve to 15-8 overall and 5-5 in the A10.
Price closed with 21 points while Stukes added 14 points and five assists while playing the full 40 minutes. Moore led a group of four GMU players in double figures with 28 on 10-of-16 from the floor. The Explorers were playing without starters
Pookie Powell and
B.J. Johnson, who missed the game due to minor injuries.
La Salle continues its two-game road swing on Wednesday, Feb. 8 with a league contest at Fordham. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
