LELAND, N.C. - The La Salle University men's golf team begins its spring season this weekend at the Cape Fear Intercollegiate, hosted by Appalachian State, on March 19-20. The Explorers commence their championship season with the first of six events, culminating with the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championships in Orlando, Fla. on April 28-30.
Seventeen teams are entered into the 54-hole event - La Salle, Appalachian State, Fairfield, Florida Gulf Coast, Hampton, Iona, St. Francis Brooklyn, N.C. Central, Newberry, Longwood, Limestone, Northern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, East Carolina, Fairleigh Dickinson, UT Arlington and South Carolina Beaufort.
A trio of golfers led the way with sub-75 scoring averages during the fall season, including redshirt senior
P.J. Acierno. Acierno shot the lowest round (66) of any La Salle player during the fall at the George Mason Intercollegiate, one stroke off his school-record performance of 65 set last year at Rutgers. Over 13 rounds in the fall, the Flourtown, Pa. native ranked second on the squad in scoring at 74.46 strokes per round.
Sophomore
Andrew Reynolds and freshman
Evan Gaesser were the two other competitors who led the Explorers over six events in their non-championship season. Reynolds led the squad with a 74.31 stroke average while Gaesser was right behind his two teammates at 74.69. Reynolds carded a 67 to tie him for third on the single-round list in La Salle history, while Gaesser set a new freshman 36-hole record with a 142 at the Binghamton Invitational.

Nick Gruber saw extensive action in the fall and figure to play pivotal roles this season for the Explorers, who will follow up the tournament in North Carolina with appearances at the Towson Invitational (March 25-26) in Maryland and at the Manor Intercollegiate (April 1-2) in Virginia.Â
Head coach
Brad Kane and his team will host the Finnegan Invitational at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club on April 10, prior to taking part in the Navy Classic on April 22-23. The A-10 Championships will once again be held at the Villas of Grand Cypress in Orlando over a three-day stretch at the end of April.
