PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball team had a stellar offensive day en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Drexel Dragons on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field. La Salle held on for a 10-8 win in the opener before run-ruling the Dragons 14-3 in game two.
Suzanne Swanicke finished the day 6-for-6 with five RBI's while
Christina Bascara,
Mackenzie Obert and
Emma Schweigert had three hits apiece. Schweigert also plated five runs.
La Salle 10, Drexel 8
The Explorers stormed out to an 8-1 lead before Drexel scored four runs in the 5
th and three more in the 7
th.
Reilly Gearhart (W, 8-8) kept the Dragons off balance early before
McKenzie Peace (S, 2) was called upon to get the final three outs.
Swanicke singled in a run in the 1
st,
Reilly Gearhart added an RBI single in the 2
nd and
Jackie Heim pushed a run home with an RBI groundout in the 3
rd to put La Salle in front 3-0. The Dragons answered with a run in the 4
th before the Explorers put up a five spot in the home half to go up 8-1.
Mackenzie Obert had a two-run homer in the 5th to make it a 10-5 game.
La Salle 14, Drexel 3
The Explorers used an eight-run 3
rd inning to turn a close 6-3 contest into a 14-3 lead. La Salle loaded the bases with one out in the 3
rd before
Emma Schweigert plated two with a single and
Suzanne Swanicke nailed a three-run home run.
Christina Bascara followed the round tripper with a single and eventually scored on an
Angelina Refice single up the middle.
Michelle Hagarty capped the scoring with a two-run single to right.
Taylor Rohrbaugh got the Explorers on the board in the 1
st with her first career grand slam off Katie Haley (L, 3-7) after Schweigert was hit by a pitch, Swanicke singled and Bascara walked. Schweigert launched a two-run homer to make it a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the 2
nd.
McKenzie Peace (W, 5-3) pitched shutout softball for 2.2 innings after entering for
Reilly Gearhart with one out in the 3
rd. Peace stranded a runner at 2
nd to preserve the lead after the Dragons scored three against Gearhart in the 3
rd.
La Salle resumes Atlantic 10 action this weekend when they visit the Saint Louis Billikens for a three-game series beginning Saturday.
