PHILADELPHIA – Marlo Roadcap struck out a career-high 15 batters in the opening game of a doubleheader against George Washington (17-17, 2-6) to help the Explorers (14-15, 4-4) to a 5-2 win and a doubleheader split with Colonials on Saturday at West Campus Field.
La Salle 5, George Washington 2
Roadcap (W, 7-5) scattered eight hits and two walks with the 15 strikeouts, surpassing her previous career-high of 13 in the complete-game effort. The Explorers used a three-run 5
th to take the lead for good after GW tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the inning.
Valerie Pineiro gave the Explorers a 1-0 lead in the 2
nd with an RBI single to center that scored
Taylor Rohrbaugh. La Salle went up 4-1 in the 5
th on a
Suzanne Swanicke RBI single and a Rohrbaugh sac fly after a GW fielding error allowed
Tori Gollie to score.
After GW cut the lead to 5-2 in the 6
th,
Michelle Hagarty answered for La Salle with an RBI single in the home half of the 6
th.
George Washington 13, La Salle 2
The Colonials charged five runs in the top of the 1
st to
Reilly Gearhart (L, 3-7), although only two were earned after a La Salle fielding error put runners on first and second with no outs.
McKenzie Peace entered with two outs in the 1
st but didn't fare much better, surrendering five runs over 3.1 innings.
Suzanne Swanicke homered in the 4
th for La Salle's only runs and made it a 10-2 game. The Colonials added three runs in the 5
th against
Val Buehler before La Salle went down in order in the bottom of the 5
th against Faith Weber (W, 2-4).
The Explorers will go for the series win on Sunday as they host the Colonials at noon at West Campus Field.
