La Salle Tops Penn 1-0 for Third Straight Shutout Win

PHILADELPHIADanielle Marx scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute and La Salle pitched its third straight shutout as the Explorers topped Penn 1-0 on Sunday evening at Rhodes Field.

The two teams battled through the first half without a score, and the game appeared destined for extra time until Marx found the back of the net for the second time this year with just over 10 minutes remaining. Madison Bower played the ball into the box before Marx eluded a defender and punched it in with her left foot.

Larisa Zambelli and the La Salle back line tallied a third straight shutout, limiting the Quakers to just two corner kicks. Zambelli was sharp in the net yet again, registering six saves against 15 shots faced.

Marx had three shots on the evening while Kristin Haugstad put both of her shots on goal against Penn keeper Kitty Qu.

The win was the first for La Salle against Penn in 15 all-time games dating back to 1991, although the inaugural meeting ended in a 1-1 tie. The two teams hadn't met since 2009.

La Salle returns to action this week in another city rivalry game as they host the Drexel Dragons on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium. The Explorers conclude the week with a Sunday afternoon matchup at Farleigh Dickinson.
