Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's soccer team (6-3-1, 1-0) defeated the Duquesne Dukes (4-3-2, 0-1) 3-0 in their Atlantic 10 opener on Thursday night at McCarthy Stadium.
Danielle Marx wasted little time getting the Explorers on the board, finding the back of the net for the third time this season just 10:42 into the match.
Katherine Hennessey played a ball into the box that
Maci Bower chased down and set back to Marx, who beat the keeper high for the score.
Jess Shanahan scored her first goal of the year in the 22
nd minute to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team, thanks to another assist from Bower. The Explorers took the 2-0 advantage into the break, along with a 7-6 advantage in shots.
Kristin Haugstad made it a three-goal game in the 68
th minute when
Paige McDowell sent a free kick from near field into the box. Haugstad was able to seal her defender and turn towards the near post and tuck the ball inside it for her third goal of the year.
The Explorers recorded their sixth shutout of the season, allowing just three shots on goal and three corner kicks.
Larisa Zambelli tallied three saves to lower her goals-against average to 0.60 for the season.
The Explorers are back in action on Sunday when they visit crosstown rival Saint Joseph's. Kickoff from Sweeney Field is set for 1 p.m.
