Men's Swimming Earns Team Win over Drexel in Home Opener

Men's Swimming

Men's Swimming and Diving | October 20, 2018

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Marcus Forsgren and freshman Zachary Wolbert each earned a pair of individual victories and the La Salle University men's swimming and diving team earned 10 first-place finishes overall in a dual meet win over Drexel on Saturday at Kirk Pool. The Explorers earned 154 points to the Dragons' 134 en route to victory.

In women's action, Drexel earned a 192-106 win over the Explorers, despite a number of quality individual performances by newcomers for La Salle.

"I thought today was a great continuation of the work we have been putting in so far this season," head coach Jamie Platt said. "What I mean by that is, in order to position the teams for a successful season, the athletes need to carry a energy and enthusiasm through practices, dual meets and invitationals just like they did today. We have a close group of athletes that have set very high goals but also have set up a great support system within the teams and both will direct us through the long season."

In his first collegiate dual match, Wolbert was victorious in both the 100 and 200 butterfly. Juniors Marcus Forsgren and Norm Gregory went 1-2 in both the 50 and 100 free, with Forsgren earning the win in the 100 and Gregory in the 50. Forsgren also bested the field in the 100 breast.

Other individual winners in the pool included junior Christoff Ras (200 Breast) and senior Kyle McElwee (200 Free). McElwee's win came by just seven hundredths of a second over teammate Aleksandar Nikolic. La Salle also picked up the win in the 400 free relay, with Forsgren, Gregory, Daniel Johnson and Ian Venter comprising the team.

On the deck, junior Blake Griffith earned wins in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

On the women's side, freshman Sarah Wyant edged teammate Olivia DiStefano to win the 50 free, one of four freshmen to pick up wins. Phoebe Shaya collected a win in the 1-meter dive, Sara Rizzetto earned the victory in the 200 free and Anne Moser won the 1000 free.

La Salle is back in action at the Atlantic 10 Classic in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday, Oct. 27.
