RICHMOND, Va. - The La Salle University volleyball team will make its Atlantic 10 Championship debut on Friday when the third-seeded Explorers take on sixth-seeded Duquesne in the opening round at 4:30 p.m. The tournament will be held at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond, Va.
SIX EXPLORERS EARN A-10 HONORS
- La Salle had six honorees, including two major awards, as the Atlantic 10 announced its year-end awards on Thursday.
- Caitlin Schweihofer was named Coach of the Year, while junior Kathryn Wood was tabbed Setter of the Year. Wood and fellow junior Devin Corah received first team all-conference honors as well.Â
- Senior Jensen Sharrits earned second team all-conference and freshman Elizabeth Osborn landed all-rookie honors. Sharrits and senior Madison Kuch also picked up all-academic accolades for the second year in a row.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Explorers' six-match winning streak came to an end over the weekend with a pair of setbacks on the road against Dayton and Saint Louis.
- Sharrits set the school record for career digs in the defeat against Dayton, while junior Catherine Edgington had a team-high 10 kills.
- Against Saint Louis, Osborn led the way with 10 kills and eight digs, and sophomore Samantha Graver recorded a career-high six service aces.
SCOUTING DUQUESNE
- Duquesne enters the weekend with a 12-15 overall mark and went 6-8 in conference play.
- The Dukes have lost their last three matches and are 2-3 in matches played at neutral sites.
- Setter Dani Suiter earned second team all-conference and sits behind Wood for second in the A-10 with 9.85 assists per set. Summer Slade, who was named to the All-Rookie Team, leads the Dukes with 2.80 kills per frame.
THE LA SALLE-DUQUESNE SERIES
- La Salle picked up its first win over Duquesne since 1999 when the Explorers swept the Dukes at Tom Gola Arena on Nov. 2.
- The two teams split the season series, with the Dukes winning on their home court, 3-1, on Oct. 12.
THE REST OF THE A-10 FIELD
- The winner between the Explorers and Dukes will take on second-seeded Dayton in the semifinals on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
- VCU, the tournament host, earned the top seed and will take on the winner of fourth-seeded George Mason and fifth-seeded Saint Louis.
- The A-10 title match will be Sunday at 12 p.m.
