BRONX, N.Y. - The La Salle University men's water polo team was within striking distance of fifth-seeded Navy heading into the fourth quarter but could not pull off the upset in a 14-10 loss on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore
Daniel Domotor led the way offensively with three goals, two assists and three exclusions drawn.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Explorers saw the Midshipmen score the game's first goal before Ash Lyne found the back of the net to tie the game.
- After another goal by Navy, sophomore Cole Strohson scored to once again knot the score at 2-2.
- Two goals to conclude the first period put the Midshipmen on top, 4-2.
- Consecutive goals from La Salle's Joey DeFusco cut a three-goal deficit to just one with 3:33 left in the first half.
- Navy once again closed the second quarter strong with two goals to head into intermission up 7-4.
- With the margin at 9-5, a three-goal run led by Domotor and Lyne brought the Explorers to within one, 9-8, going into the fourth quarter.
- The two teams traded goals to begin the fourth quarter but Navy ultimately pulled away, scoring four of the last five goals of the match.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Strohson chipped in two goals, one exclusion drawn and two steals while DeFusco had two goals, one assist, two steals and a pair of blocked shots.
- Lyne had two goals, one assist and one steal, and freshman Robert Greene had one goal and one exclusion drawn.
UP NEXT
- La Salle will face McKendree on Sunday morning in the final match of the season, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
