Women’s Basketball Falls to Villanova in Intense Big 5 Battle

VILLANOVA, Pa. – La Salle women's basketball (0-5) had its best game offensively as the Explorers fell to Big 5 foe, Villanova (3-0), 88-68. La Salle tied its season high in points with 68, while shooting a season best 39.4% from the floor.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first quarter was back and forth after the Explorers scored the first basket of the game. Collectively, La Salle had its best first frame of the season offensively, scoring 17 points.
  • Late in the second, the Explorers battled back, taking a 10-3 run over a 3:07 span to knot things at 33. La Salle scored a second quarter season high 18 points.
  • After the Wildcats took a run to begin the third frame, the Explorers responded with a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to five.
  • The final frame was back and forth again, with Villanova shutting down defensively to hold off any chance of an Explorer comeback.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Shalina Miller scored a season high 15 points to lead the team.
  • Senior Jeryn Reese finished second on the team with 10 points to set a new career mark.
  • Freshman Janay Sanders made her first career start, ending with a career best nine points.
  • Collectively, the Explorers outrebounded Villanova, 47-32. Reese led the team, tying a career high with eight boards. Freshman Shayla Sweeney corralled a career best seven rebounds in her first career start.
  • The Explorers tied their season high in points (68), while setting new marks in field goals (26) and field goal percentage (39.4%).
  • Every Explorer notched a rebound, while all but one registered a point.
UP NEXT:
La Salle has an eight-day break before it is back in action next. The Explorers will host city foe, Drexel, on Wednesday, November 28 for the team's first home game since the season opener. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN+.
