Men's Basketball Falls to Miami (Fla.) in Opening-Round Game of The Wooden Legacy

FULLERTON, Calif. - The La Salle University men's basketball team suffered through a tough shooting afternoon in an 85-49 loss to Miami (Fla.) in the opening round of The Wooden Legacy on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Jared Kimbrough went a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor and scored 10 points to lead the Explorers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers jumped out to an early 6-4 lead following a short hook from sophomore Miles Brookins, who played in front of numerous family members in a homecoming of sorts.
  • Brookins played high school basketball at Mater Dei and hails from Santa Ana, Calif., just 15 minutes from Fullerton.
  • Junior Traci Carter pilfered a steal on the ensuing possession and looked as though he was going to extend La Salle's lead, but was called for his second personal foul on his way to the basket.
  • With Carter relegated to the bench in foul trouble, the Explorers struggled to find a rhythm and saw Miami catch fire.
  • The Hurricanes went on a 12-0 run, including five straight points from Anthony Mack, to take a 16-6 lead.
  • Miami eventually extended the lead to a 31-point margin by intermission, concluding the opening 20 minutes of the game with an impressive 62.5 field goal percentage.
  • La Salle, in contrast, shot 29.6 percent from the floor and was 1-for-13 from three-point range.
  • The second half saw La Salle force 12 Miami turnovers with a pesky full-court press, but the Explorers could not claw their way back within striking distance.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Overall, La Salle shot 2-for-25 from three-point range (8.0%) with sophomore David Beatty and graduate student Cheddi Mosely accounting for the two makes.
  • Kimbrough and fellow freshman Ed Croswell totaled 15 points combined, with Croswell adding a team-high six rebounds (four offensive).
  • Five players reached double figures for the Hurricanes, with Chris Lykes leading the way (18 points)
