WASHINGTON – The La Salle women's basketball team (7-15, 2-7) couldn't overcome a 3
rd quarter run by George Washington (10-11, 5-4) in a 60-45 loss to the Colonials on Thursday night at the Smith Center.
Shaquana Edwards hit a three on La Salle's first possession of the 3
rd quarter to tie the game before GW outscored the Explorers 26-11 over the final 9:31 of the quarter. The Colonials went 6-for-7 from three-point range during that stretch, hitting six of their eight three-point field goals during the quarter.
Amy Griffin led La Salle with 17 points, including 13 in the second half, while Edwards got off to a strong start and finished with 16 points. Griffin also recorded five blocks, which moved her past Suzi McCaffrey (1982-86) into second place in program history with 138 career blocks.
Griffin converted back-to-back three-point plays to spark an 8-0 run for La Salle to begin the 4
th quarter, but the Colonials wouldn't let La Salle get any closer than seven points.
Mei-Lyn Bautista led all scorers with a career-high 22 points for GW while Brianna Cummings narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Kelli Prange chipped in 13 points and six rebounds in 26 minutes off the bench.
GW held a 35-25 advantage on the glass, and converted 17 offensive rebounds into 20 second-chance points.
The Explorers are back on the road this weekend as they play at Massachusetts on Sunday at 12 p.m.
