PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's basketball team (8-17, 3-9) fell victim to a late rally by the Spiders in a 60-57 loss to Richmond (10-15, 5-7) on Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena at TruMark Financial Center.
Richmond scored eight unanswered points midway through the 4
th quarter, eventually taking a 58-53 lead with 2:09 to play. The Explorers cut the deficit to one point thanks to a pair of free throws by
Amy Griffin and then a fastbreak layup by
Shaquana Edwards with 1:27 left.
Griffin's go-ahead jumper off the glass narrowly missed with 26 seconds left and La Salle was forced to foul. Richmond's Dee Hatcher hit a pair of foul shots to make it a three-point game but the Explorers missed contested game-tying threes in their final two possessions.
Adreana Miller and
Sofilia Ngwafang had 12 points apiece to lead the Explorers while Griffin and Edwards each had 10 points. Griffin and Edwards combined for nine assists and Griffin had a game-high four steals.
The Explorers outscored Richmond 18-10 in the 3
rd quarter to turn a 34-29 halftime deficit into a three-point lead heading into the final quarter. Ngwafang was instrumental in the rally, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the 3
rd quarter as the Explorers took the lead.
Jasmine White played a season-high 19 minutes, tallying career-highs with five points and six rebounds.
Adreana Miller also grabbed six boards, which was a team-high. Griffin, Edwards and Ngwafang all chipped in five rebounds.
The Explorers are on the road for a pair of games next week, beginning with a midweek trip to New York. La Salle tips at Fordham on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
