FAIRFAX, Va. –
Amy Griffin blocked four shots to become La Salle's all-time leader in blocks in a 65-55 loss at George Mason (22-8, 11-5) in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at EagleBank Arena.
Griffin tied Linda French (1982-87) for the program record of 147 blocks just 31 seconds into action before breaking the record at the 4:10 mark in the 2
nd quarter. Griffin finished the afternoon with 150 blocks for her career.
The senior also poured in a team-high 25 points for La Salle (8-21, 3-13), going 11-for-20 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line.
Shalina Miller and
Sofilia Ngwafang finished with 10 points apiece.
La Salle was within striking distance for most of the second half, and eventually cut the GMU lead to 55-53 after a foul shot by
Ashanti Freeland with 2:43 left in regulation. The Patriots, however, answered with 10 straight points to push the game out of reach.
Mason's Natalie Butler led all scorers with 26 points and notched her 29
th consecutive double-double with 17 rebounds. Nicole Cardaño-Hillary and Jacy Bolton also finished in double figures for the Patriots, posting 19 and 10 points, respectively.
La Salle controlled the 2
nd quarter to overcome a slow start, outscoring the Patriots 17-12 to go into halftime trailing 31-27. George Mason was hot early, taking a nine-point lead during the opening quarter.
La Salle has earned the No. 12 seed for the Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins next week.The Explorers will play at No. 5 George Washington in the opening round on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
