BROOKLYN, NY - The La Salle women's lacrosse team (4-4) staved off the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds (3-6) on the road Friday evening, 16-12. Senior
Brittany Edwards completely took over the game at one point in the second half and scored four consecutive goals to help La Salle pull away. She finished with six, giving her an Atlantic-10-leading 27 goals this season.
With the win, the Explorers have now been victorious in two straight games in New York. La Salle most recently went to Manhattan, defeating the Jaspers last week.
Despite Edwards' offensive explosion, defeating the Blackbirds was a total team effort. The Explorers came out of the gates firing -- a goal by
Hope Smith put La Salle on the board just seconds after she entered the game as a substitute following the opening draw. The Blackbirds took the punch unfazed, however, and countered with two goals in two minutes. La Salle found itself trailing for the only time in the game, but it didn't last long.
Isabel Caddick found the back of the net for the second time this year to tie the score at two just under five minutes into the game.
The Explorers would score six of the next eight goals and take a 9-5 lead into the half.
Again, LIU Brooklyn was up to the task and scored the first goal out of the break. It wasn't until the 14:39 mark of the second frame that La Salle was able to comfortably break free. First,
Brittany Stevens scored to make it a 12-8 game. Then, between 12:33 and 10:23, Edwards would find the back of the net four times.
Lynne Frankel continued to be a problem for other teams. The goalie had six saves in net.
Emily Johnston and Smith each finished with two goals. Johnston also led with nine draw controls.
Six others scored one goal each.
Mikki Raymond had a particularly strong game all around, scoring a goal to go along with three assists and four draw controls.
Abbey Meehan was all over the place. She scooped up a team-high four grounders and caused six turnovers. She also had three draw controls.
La Salle begins Atlantic 10 play at Davidson on Thursday at 4:30 PM. They return home on Saturday to take on George Mason at 5:30 PM.
