PHILADELPHIA – Trailing by a run late, the La Salle University baseball team pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning and held on for a 6-4 home win over Delaware State on Tuesday from Hank DeVincent Field.
It was the fourth win in the last six games for the Explorers and was their second consecutive home victory.
Junior
Brett Simon struck a two-run double to put La Salle ahead in the seventh, and senior
Austin Constantini shut down the Hornets in the ninth to cap off the win.
Delaware State struck first with a run on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and then pushed the advantage to 2-0 on an RBI single by Todd Henry.
La Salle chipped away at the lead in the fifth inning, with junior
Kevin McGowan driving in freshman
Tommy Toal to make it a one-run game.
Then the momentum quickly shifted in the Explorers' favor in the seventh, as the home team plated four on four hits. Simon laced a double down the left field line to knock in Toal and senior
Yan Carlo Rivera, giving La Salle its first lead of the day. Constantini followed with a single, and then Simon scored on a balk. Senior
Brian Dudeck later made it a 5-2 advantage for the Explorers with a two-out single, scoring Constantini.
The Hornets quickly answered with two runs in the top of the eighth, but Toal provided another insurance run in the bottom of the frame, driving home senior
Rafael Amanau on a double down the left field line to make it 6-4.
Constantini took the mound in the ninth and struck out two of the three batters he faced while recording his third save of the season.
Senior
Chase Arnold went 3-for-4 with a double on the day, as did Simon. Toal was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Redshirt junior
Greg Paprocki started on the hill and was one of seven Explorers to pitch in the game. Sophomore
Sebastian Martinez (2-0) picked up his second straight win after throwing a perfect seventh inning.
Junior
Ben Faso's hit streak came to an end at 16 games, which ranks fifth in school history. La Salle (9-21) is already just one win shy of its 2017 total with 23 regular season games remaining.
The Explorers will return to Atlantic 10 Conference action next, as they host Fordham for a three-game home series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
