PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle University field hockey team will open its season with three straight home contests, beginning Friday afternoon as it hosts Ohio U. The match will begin at 12:00 p.m., and will be shown live on ESPN+ (subscription required).
ABOUT LA SALLE
- The game will be the head coaching debut of Kelly Broadway, who was hired as the 14th head coach in program history in the spring. Broadway spent the last seven seasons as an assistant and associate head coach in the Philadelphia area (Temple & Villanova).
- Four student-athletes were named captain ahead of the season opener - seniors Mackenzie Karcher, Megan Kida and Logan Oh, as well as junior Chloe Lucky.
- Karcher ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 in goals last season with 10, while Kida started all 17 contests as a defender.
- The game will be the first against Ohio in program history.
SCOUTING OHIO
- The Bobcats will also have a new coach on the sideline on Friday, as Ali Johnstone begins her first season at the helm. Johnstone previously played field hockey at Ohio and was most recently associate head coach at Northwestern.
- Ohio is coming off a 4-12 season in 2017, including a 2-4 mark in MAC play. The team was picked to finish sixth in their league according to the preseason poll.
- Senior Kendall Ballard is the top returning player for the Bobcats. Ballard was named First Team All-MAC and Second Team All-NFHCAÂ West Region after leading her team in goals (8), points (21) and a slew of other categories.
- Ballard played this summer for the United States U-21 National Team as it competed in a tournament in Argentina.
