Olatoye and McCarthy Guide Men’s Soccer to 2-1 Road Win at Iona

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - The La Salle University men's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 2-1 road victory over Iona College on Saturday. Junior Pat McCarthy and sophomore Soji Olatoye each scored their first goal of the season for the Explorers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It only took 6:09 for the Explorers to take the lead, as McCarthy scored on a one-timer from Olatoye and freshman Ike Hollinger.
  • La Salle held the 1-0 advantage at halftime and extended the lead in the 62nd minute, when Olatoye converted a header off a rebound on a shot by McCarthy.
  • The Explorers held the Gaels scoreless until the 86th minute before Lenworth Lopez scored on a one-timer from Anthony Gomez, cutting the La Salle lead in half.
  • Iona got three shots off over the final two minutes, but senior goalkeeper Cameron Keys saved both attempts on goal, as La Salle hung on for the road win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Just as it had in the season-opening win over Howard, La Salle held the advantage in shots on goal (5-4).
  • Iona took five more shots in the game (14-9) and had a 10-4 shot advantage in the second half.
  • Keys made three saves in the contest, improving to 2-0 in goal.
  • It is the second time La Salle has started 2-0 in the last three seasons under head coach Rob Irvine.

  • The Explorers will return home for the next two games, beginning with a matchup against St. Francis Brooklyn on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
