PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore
Molly O'Brien had a career night Thursday as the La Salle University women's soccer team (5-1-1) took down Fairleigh Dickinson (2-6-1), 2-1. O'Brien's three points mark a career high for the Media, Pa. native, while her goal and assist are the firsts of her career.
COACH SAYS:
- "It was a good team effort and win, but I felt our execution all over the field was not at the level it has been," said head coach Paul Royal. "We were very sloppy with moving the ball and closing the game out late, but we were very fortunate by two quality finishes. As we now begin our preparations for a tough A10 slate, we're confident these girls and our outstanding leadership will continue to grow stronger as a unit."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Early into the first half O'Brien took a feed from junior Jess Shanahan that she was able to get past the Knights' keeper to take the lead, 1-0.
- Later in the half during the 24th minute, O'Brien popped the ball over a defender for redshirt-senior Madison Bower. Bower took the ball and smashed it past the keeper in the upper left corner to give the Explorers a 2-0 advantage.
- In the second half, the Knights drew a penalty kick during the 76th minute that found the back of the net.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Bower was a perfect one-for-one on shots, scoring her fifth goal of the season.
- Sophomore keeper Claudia Jenkins made three saves on the night, allowing the lone goal.
UP NEXT:
The Explorers have a week before they're in action again. On Thursday, September 20, La Salle will take on Davidson in North Carolina for a 7 p.m. matchup.
