PHILADELPHIA - Hosting its first two opponents of the season at Kirk Pool, the La Salle University men's water polo team got off to a slow start but fought valiantly against two tough opponents. The Explorers outscored No. 18 George Washington, 7-6, in the second half of a 21-10 loss and were within two of Navy in the fourth quarter before suffering a 15-10 defeat.
HOW IT HAPPENED
George Washington 21, La Salle 10
- A slow start allowed the Colonials to take a 10-0 lead which they increased to 15-3 by halftime.
- The Explorers countered with a strong second half but could not make up the deficit.
- Sophomore Daniel Domotor led the way with 3 goals and a steal.
- Derek DeFusco added two goals, two steals and a block, while Cole Strohson had another strong all-around game with a goal, three steals, a block and two forced exclusions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Navy 15, La Salle 10
- The Explorers were within striking distance in the final quarter, trailing by three with six minutes remaining.
- Strohson's swatted away a shot attempt by Navy and led to a counter attack that led to a cross-cage shot from Joey DeFusco finding the back of the net to cut Navy's lead to 11-9.
- Unfortunately, Strohson ended up getting his third defensive exclusion of the game on the next defensive possession, making him ineligible to play.
- Navy then went on a 4-1 run to secure their victory.
- Strohson finished the game with four goals on nine shots, an assist, five exclusions drawn, four steals and three blocks in an impressive all-around performance.
- Sophomore classmate Daniel Domotor also scored four goals, had an assist and added three steals, and Joey DeFusco also impressed the home crowd with two goals, an assist, a drawn exclusion, in addition to a steal and a block.
- Cameron Schiable had a solid game in goal with 10 saves and three steals.
UP NEXT
- The Explorers will get another crack at Navy next weekend in Annapolis, Md., on Friday, Sept. 28. La Salle will continue its road swing the following day with matches against GW and Johns Hopkins.
