ERIE, Pa. - The La Salle University men's water polo team dropped two matches on the first day of the Mercyhurst Invitational on Saturday. The Explorers were edged by Salem, 12-11, before falling to Gannon, 18-9, later in the day.
Against Gannon, captain
Cole Strohson tallied six goals, a steal and two blocks while sophomore
Daniel Domotor had four goals, an assist and a block. The match was close the entire way, and was knotted at 10-10 heading to the fourth quarter but Salem tallied a pair in the final stanza to earn the victory.
In the second match of the day, La Salle had a number of freshmen step up to the challenge in defeat. Goalie
Solomon Cohen earned his first two saves of the season, and classmate
Josh Delillo drew a penalty shot on a fast break and was able to convert the penalty for his first goal of the season.
Two newcomers, Robert Greene and Zerek Eschleman, scored the first goals of their collegiate career. Lefty attacker Esteban Rodriguez scored two goals in the game, giving him a total of three for the season.
Sophomore Ash Lyne also registered a pair of goals, junior Joey DeFusco scored a goal and Strohson scored and continued to play excellent defense with three steals and a block for the Explorers.
The Explorers conclude play in Erie with two matches on Sunday.
