PHILADELPHIA – In a back and forth game throughout the first three quarters, the La Salle women's basketball team (3-14, 0-3 A-10) battled hard against UMass (10-7, 2-1 A-10), however a strong fourth quarter by the Minutewomen sealed the game, 74-60. Freshman
Janay Sanders neared a double-double with 10 points and a career high eight assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle opened the first frame with a 10-8 advantage over the first 5:18 of the game before the media timeout was called. Over the remainder of the quarter, UMass dropped seven compared to La Salle's five to close the first tied at 15.
- After the Explorers opened the second period on a 7-2 run over the first 1:36, UMass answered with a 9-2 spurt to the break at 4:38. The Minutewomen ended the frame with a 6-3 advantage to push their lead to 32-27.
- La Salle regained the momentum in the first half of the third period. Heading into the media timeout at 4:45, the Explorers outscored the Minutewomen 15-9, which included three straight three pointers. The Minutewomen answered outscoring La Salle 12-8 through the remainder of the half to hold a 53-50 lead.
- UMass started to pull away in the fourth quarter as it scored 14 of the first 20 points in the stanza over the quarters beginning 6:06. The game finished with the Minutewomen on a 7-4 spurt to seal the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- La Salle was led by sophomore Rayshel Brown with 14 points, followed by classmate Michelle Nicholls with 11 points and Sanders with 10.
- Junior Shalina Miller neared a double-double as she scored nine points and corralled eight boards. She also added three blocks and a career best four steals to her stat line.
- Sanders also added six rebounds, three steals, and a block to her totals.
- Nicholls added a career best five assists.
- Sophomore Jasmine White dropped a career high six points, adding a career best four steals.
- As a whole, the Explorers shot 41.1% (23-of-56) from the floor.
