Reese Notches Career High as Women’s Basketball Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Fordham

PHILADELPHIA – After trailing by as many as 16 points, the La Salle women's basketball team (3-19, 0-8 A-10) mounted a comeback with a 23-9 run over an 11:23 span to tie the game early in the fourth quarter, however the Fordham Rams (14-8, 5-3 A-10) were able to prevail on Thursday night, 65-54. Senior Jeryn Reese set a career mark with 15 points.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first quarter started with Reese scoring the first five points for either team. The Rams responded by outscoring the Explorers, 16-9, through the remainder of the frame to hold a slim, 16-14, lead.
  • Fordham opened the second stanza with a 14-6 run over the first 6:14. The Rams closed the half on an 8-6 advantage, to take a 38-26 lead into the break.
  • In a defensive first 3:30 of the third quarter, the Rams held La Salle scoreless, while scoring just four points. The Explorers ended the stanza on a 15-3 run over the final 4:27, including three straight three pointers. The spurt pulled La Salle within four, 45-41. The Explorers allowed just seven points in the period, the lowest they've allowed in a third quarter this season.
  • La Salle began the fourth frame on an 8-4 run over the first 3:10 to tie the game at 49. Fordham regained the lead with the Explorers pulling within three, however the Rams sealed the game by finishing with a 16-5 advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Joining Reese in double figures were junior Shalina Miller with 12 points and freshman Janay Sanders with 11 points.
  • Miller neared a double-double, adding nine rebounds to her totals. The Philadelphia, Pa. native also blocked four shots, handed out three assists, and registered two steals in the game, while shooting 50% (6-of-12) from the floor.
  • Reese's 15 points came on 50% (6-of-12) shooting, including 60% (3-of-5) from long range.
  • The Explorers hit a season best 57.1% (8-of-14) from downtown.
  • Fordham sat atop the nation heading into the game, giving up just 10.8 turnovers per game. La Salle was able to force 18 turnovers on the night.
