Men’s Soccer Blanks Rival Saint Joseph’s, 2-0

PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Brett Werner recorded his second clean sheet of the season as the La Salle University men's soccer team shut out rival Saint Joseph's, 2-0, Saturday evening in front of the home crowd at McCarthy Stadium. Sophomore Franc Gamiz Quer and senior Pat McCarthy tallied the goal for the Explorers.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • La Salle got off to a quick start, scoring two goals over the first 21 minutes of action.
  • In the 11th minute, Gamiz Quer scored his first collegiate goal on an assist from sophomore Colin Bateman after corralling a rebound on a shot off the crossbar by sophomore Charlie Collins.
  • The Explorers then added a second goal in the 21st minute when sophomore Omari Cotterell found McCarthy for his fourth goal of the year, giving the home squad a 2-0 lead that it would take into halftime.
  • Saint Joseph's fired 13 shots in the second half, but Werner stopped all six shots on goal in the period to secure the shutout.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Werner finished with a season-high nine saves to improve his record to 4-4 on the season.
  • The Explorers won despite being outshot by the Hawks 21-7, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal for Saint Joe's.
  • La Salle improved to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference while also improving its home record to 5-1-1 this season.

  • The Explorers will continue A-10 play on Wednesday when they travel to Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. match.
