Women’s Basketball Aims to Keep Momentum Sunday at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – After an impressive win Friday night against Harvard, the La Salle women's basketball team (2-1) finishes its two-game weekend at Penn State (2-1). Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the Bryce Jordan Center with the game streaming on the Big Ten Network Plus.
 
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
  • The Explorers rebounded on Friday night with an impressive win over Harvard, 75-69. La Salle came back from a 16-point deficit, led by twin sisters Amy Jacobs and Claire Jacobs. The duo combined for 32 points (17 from Amy and 15 from Claire). The Blue & Gold committed a season-low 10 turnovers, while forcing 24 from the Crimson. The win avenged a 45-point loss a season ago in Cambridge, Mass.
  • After Friday's performance, freshman Claire Jacobs is the team's leading scorer with 14.0 ppg. She's shooting 50.0% (16-of-32) from the field, including 40.0% (6-of-15) from long range. The rookie led La Salle in its season opening win with 20 points against Howard. She's scored 43 points through her first three collegiate games.
  • Sophomore Kayla Spruill is the Explorers' next leading scorer at 12.3 ppg. Big Smooth is third on the team in rebounding at 6.3 rpg. She dropped a career high 19 points in the overtime loss to Robert Morris.
  • Senior Shalina Miller is pacing the squad in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and blocks (2.67 bpg). Miller set the single season block record during her junior campaign and is 30 shy of tying the all-time program record set Amy Griffin '18.
  • The first three games on the 2019-20 season are an exact match to that of head coach Mountain MacGillivray's first season in 2018-19. During the inaugural year, La Salle went 0-3 and lost by a combined 74 points. This season, the Explorers post a 2-1 record and have outscored their opponents 19 points.
SCOUTING THE LADY LIONS:
  • Penn State has is 2-1 overall with wins over Towson and defending Atlantic 10 Champion, Fordham. The Lady Lions' lone loss came at home to Rider, who the Explorers will take on later this season.
  • The Lady Lions are averaging 71.7 ppg this season while allowing 68.0 ppg.
  • Four different players are averaging double-digit scoring totals, led by Siyeh Frazier with 16.3 ppg. The senior guard is also the team's leading rebounder at 8.0 boards per outing.
  • Kamaria McDaniel is the second leading scorer with 15.7 ppg and is shooting 37.2% (16-of-43) from the floor and 33.3% (4-of-12) from long range.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • The Lady Lions own the series record at 5-0, dating back to 1981.
  • The most recent matchup came 19 years ago in December of 2000.
  • La Salle is 0-3 on the road and 0-2 in Philadelphia.
