UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. – With a dominant fourth quarter, the La Salle women's basketball team (3-1) completed a 21-point comeback to defeat Penn State (2-2) Sunday afternoon inside the Bryce Jordan Center, 69-67. The rookie trio of
Amy Jacobs,
Claire Jacobs, and
Jordon Lewis led the Explorers with a combined 39 points.
The victory marks the first-ever over Penn State in the six-game series and La Salle's first win over a Power 5 team since it topped Miami on November 11, 2015.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle opened the game scoring the first five points before the home team found the scoreboard. The Lady Lions held the upper hand through the remainder of the frame and led 17-14 after one.
- Penn State rallied to start the second stanza and scored the first 12 points as part of a 14-2 advantage until the media break at 4:48. The Lady Lions bolstered their lead through the remainder of the frame as they outscored La Salle, 10-5, for a 41-21 lead at the half.
- The Explorers started to chip away at the deficit with a 10-4 margin through the first 5:03. La Salle ended the stanza with a two-point edge, 15-13. Penn State led, 54-36.
- La Salle dominated the final period as it outscored Penn State 33-13. The Blue & Gold shot 61.1% (11-of-28) in the frame.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- C. Jacobs led the scoring efforts with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-5 from long range.
- Lewis registered a career best 12 points and seven rebounds. The rookie also handed out three assists and made two steals.
- A. Jacobs dropped 10 points as the team's third leading scorer.
- A total of nine different student-athletes recorded a point.
- La Salle outrebounded Penn State, 43-38.
- The Explorers had a season best 17 assists.
