ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Eleven different Explorers recorded a point on Saturday as the La Salle women's basketball team (6-1) defeated (2-5) in the opening game of the Navy Classic. Freshmen
Amy Jacobs and
Claire Jacobs combined for 27 points, including six of the team's season high 13 three pointers. The victory marked the team's fifth-straight win.
La Salle advanced to the championship game of the Navy Classic where it will take on Navy Sunday afternoon at 3:15 p.m.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UMBC held the upper hand in the first frame with a 17-13 lead after one.
- La Salle responded in the second stanza as it outscored UMBC 18-10, including a 6-0 run over the final 1:57. The Explorers hit five three pointers in the frame.
- The Explorers held a slight margin in the third quarter as they outpaced UMBC 18-14.
- The Blue & Gold owned the final period. The quarter started with defensive efforts by both teams, before La Salle took a 12-0 run over a 1:45 span to the media break at 5:01. UMBC rallied in the final five minutes with a 15-13 advantage, however the rally was too late.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- C. Jacobs led the team with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-6 from three-point range.
- A. Jacobs dropped 13 points on 5-of-8 from the floor and 3-of-6 from downtown.
- Freshmen Jordon Lewis rounded out the double-digit scorers with an even 10 points.
- Junior Kate Hill tied a career high with seven assists with zero turnovers from the point guard spot.
- Senior Shalina Miller deflected a team-high three shots of the team's eight total blocks.
- La Salle out shot UMBC 38.6% from the floor and 41.9% on threes, compared to the Retrievers' 32.3% and 20.0%, respectively.
- The Explorers finished the game with a +5 turnover margin with the help of 10 steals.
- La Salle dished out a season high 19 assists.
GAME NOTES:
- All 14 Explorers played in the game. This is the second time this season that has happened.
- The victory matched La Salle's win total from last season.
