ANNAPOLIS, Md. – With a win over UMBC in the opening round of the Navy Classic, the La Salle women's basketball team (6-1) is scheduled to take on Navy (4-3) in the championship game on Sunday at 3:15 p.m. The Explorers look to make it six-straight wins and top their win total from a season ago.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS:
- La Salle defeated UMBC, 74-58, in Saturday's game to advance to the final against Navy.
- The Blue & Gold are riding a five game win streak and have matched its win total from a season ago with six.
- The 6-1 start is the best start since the 2006-07 season when the team went 7-0 through the first seven games.
- Freshmen and sophomores are making up 63.5% of the Explorers scoring this season, including 56.4% from the team's top four scorers in freshman Claire Jacobs, sophomore Kayla Spruill, freshman Jordon Lewis, and freshman Amy Jacobs.
- La Salle has four players at 8.0 ppg or more this season, led by freshman Claire Jacobs with 12.6 ppg. Jacobs is shooting 42.1% from the floor, including 44.1% from long range. She's scored 10+ points in five games this season and 15+ in three.
- Sophomore Kayla Spruill is the Explorers' second leading scorer at 10.0 ppg. Her rebounding efforts have her in second on the team with 5.4 rpg.
- Rookie Jordon Lewis is third on the team in both points and rebounds. The Houston, Texas native is averaging 9.1 ppg and 5.1 rpg, while hitting 41.1% of her shots.
- Freshman Amy Jacobs rounds out the Explorers top four scorers at 8.4 ppg with a 43.8% field goal percentage and 41.4% three-point field goal percentage.
- Senior Shalina Miller sits atop La Salle in rebounding with 8.4 rpg and blocks with 2.7 bpg. Miller set the single season block record last year with 64 and is 19 shy of tying the all-time record set by Amy Griffin '18 at 151.
SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN:
- Navy is riding a two-game win streak after wins over Kennesaw State and Air Force.
- The Midshipmen are averaging 60.1 ppg and allowing opponents to score 57.0 ppg.
- Navy has three scorers around the 10.0 ppg mark, led by Jennifer Coleman with 10.8 ppg. Coleman is shooting 46.2% from the field and 47.1% from long range.
- Sophie Gatzounas is second with 10.1 ppg, followed by Kolbi Green at 9.7 ppg.
- Gatzounas is the Midshipmen's leading rebounder at 5.6 rpg.
SERIES HISTORY:
- Sunday's contest will be the first ever between the two schools.
