PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore
Kayla Spruill led the La Salle women's basketball team (1-1) with 19 points on Saturday afternoon as the Explorers fell to Robert Morris (1-1), 71-68.
A season ago, the Colonials topped the Blue & Gold by 28 points on their way to the NCAA Tournament. La Salle eyed revenge, however, couldn't complete the venture.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Robert Morris held the advantage in the first frame, outscoring the Explorers 16-11.
- After the visitors scored the first four points of the second period, La Salle took a 15-6 run over a 6:38 span to tie the game at 26. Senior Sofilia Ngwafang had nine points at the break, including seven on the 15-6 spurt.
- The Blue & Gold opened the third stanza outscoring Robert Morris, 8-3 over the first 3:07. Robert Morris closed the frame with a 9-5 margin.
- The fourth quarter was back-and-forth with La Salle holding a 22-21 advantage and sent the game into overtime.
- Overtime saw five lead changes with the Colonials claiming the victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- La Salle outshot Robert Morris and hit 35.5% (22-of-62) of its shots, compared the the Colonials' 30.6% (22-of-72).
- The Explorers also out rebounded the Colonials, 55-43.
- Ngwafang finished with a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds). She also deflected two shots.
- Freshman Jordon Lewis dropped 10 points as the team's third highest score and added four assists.
- Senior Shalina Miller recorded three blocks in 16 minutes of play.
- La Salle recorded eight blocks as a team.
- A total of eight different players recorded a point in the game.
GAME NOTES:
- Spruill's 19 points sets a career mark, topping her 16 points against George Mason to conclude the regular season last year.
- Junior Haleigh Hill made her first career Division I appearance.
- Freshman Christina Kline saw her first game action in the Blue & Gold.
