Holt, Faso Lift Explorers to 6-3 Win at Charleston Southern on Opening Day

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Junior Matt Holt matched his career high with eight strikeouts and senior Ben Faso smacked a three-run home run to guide the La Salle University baseball team to a 6-3 victory at Charleston Southern Friday night in the season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Holt was lights out from the start, racking up six strikeouts through the first four innings.
  • The Buccaneers threatened with a man on third in both the first and fourth innings, but Holt kept the game scoreless heading to the fifth.
  • CSU scored the game's first run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly before Holt struck out the final batter.
  • After a cold start, the offense struck in the sixth frame. Freshman Quentin Brown notched an RBI single for his first collegiate hit, scoring sophomore Tommy Toal to tie the game at one apiece.
  • Freshman Nick O'Day was then hit by pitch to bring Faso up, who picked up right where he left off last season, blasting a three-run bomb to left field to push La Salle ahead, 4-1.
  • Holt exited the game after the sixth, and the Buccaneers quickly took advantage, pushing two runs across on an error and a wild pitch to make it a one-run game.
  • The Explorers got some insurance in the ninth though, as freshman Nick Hopkins reached on an error to score senior Brian Tagoe. Hopkins then scored on an RBI single by senior Brett Simon to extend the lead to 6-3.
  • Senior Connor Hinchliffe tossed 2.1 innings of relief and picked up the save as he closed out the opening win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • It's the first season-opening win for La Salle since 2015 when the Explorers finished 24-27-1 overall.
  • Holt finished off six innings of work with just one earned run allowed on five hits.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle (1-0) will look to keep it going on Saturday for game two at 4 p.m.
