Third-Inning Troubles Too Much for Baseball Against Buccaneers

CHARLESTON, S.C. - A third inning grand slam proved to be the difference, as the La Salle University baseball team fell to Charleston Southern in the second game of the series, 7-3, Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Jackson Ray got through the first two innings with little trouble and had three strikeouts heading to the third before the Buccaneers took off. Dante Blakeney delivered a two-out grand slam to give CSU a comfortable 4-0 lead early on.
  • The Explorers come back within striking distance in the fifth inning though. Freshman Quentin Brown drew a bases-loaded walk to score fellow rookie Nick Hopkins.
  • Senior Ben Faso then reached on an error to bring home sophomore Tommy Toal, making it 4-2. But La Salle left the bags full, as CSU escaped with the lead.
  • The Buccaneers quickly answered, however, with a pair of RBI singles to extend the lead back to four after five innings. The home team then added another insurance run in the seventh after scoring an unearned run on an error.
  • Freshman Tatem Levins drove in classmate Nick O'Day on an RBI groundout in the eighth, but that was all La Salle could muster.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Toal went 1-for-3 with a run and walk, while Hopkins was 1-for-4 with a run and a stolen base.
  • Sophomore Colin Kennedy struck out three and gave up three hits over four innings of relief.
UP NEXT
  • The Explorers (1-1) will look to win the opening series on Sunday for game three at 1 p.m.
