Baseball Wins Opening Series at Charleston Southern with 5-4 Comeback Victory

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The La Salle University baseball team captured its opening series of the season at Charleston Southern with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory on Sunday, taking 2-of-3 games from the Buccaneers. The Explorers overcame an early 3-0 deficit behind a solo home run from freshman Nick O'Day in the third inning and a four-run fourth inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Charleston Southern struck first with threes runs off the bats of Ryan Stoudemire and Josh Litchfield for a 3-0 lead after two innings.
  • O'Day connected on his first career homer in the third frame, a solo shot to left field to get the Explorers on the board.
  • La Salle then exploded for four runs on five hits in the fourth inning to suddenly jump in front.
  • Freshman Quentin Brown ripped a two-run single down the right field line to tie the game as senior Brett Simon and freshman Matt Rivera crossed the plate. Brown then stole second and came around to score on an RBI double down the left field line by O'Day. Senior Kevin McGowan later singled to make it 5-3 in favor of the Explorers.
  • Senior right-hander Mike Anthony took over for freshman starter Aidan Frye in the fifth and worked his way through the next 3.2 innings.
  • The Buccaneers added a run in the bottom of the eighth, but junior Niko Jenkins got the final batter to pop out to send it to the ninth.
  • Senior pitcher Connor Hinchliffe (Sv, 2) came in for the close in the ninth and polished off another win for the Explorers, picking up his second save of the weekend.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle wins the opening series of the year, already matching its number of three-game series wins from last season.
  • It's the first season-opening series victory for the Explorers since the 2015 campaign.
  • O'Day finished the day 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored in addition to the long ball. McGowan, Rivera and senior Ben Faso all posted two-hit games as well.
  • Anthony (1-0) allowed just one run with two strikeouts in relief, while Frye scattered four hits and three runs with two strikeouts over four innings.
UP NEXT
  • La Salle (2-1) will hit the road again on Friday, Feb. 22, to start its next three-game series at Furman.
