PHILADELPHIA – In a game that featured 15 ties and 16 lead changes, including five ties in the final quarter, the La Salle women's basketball team (4-23, 1-12 A-10) fell to Saint Joseph's (10-15, 6-6 A-10), 64-63, Sunday afternoon. The Explorers had five players register double digit point totals for the first time since December 5, 2010 against Tulsa.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- La Salle started hot, scoring the first six points of the game before SJU found the scoreboard. The Hawks eventually pulled ahead after the Explorers got in foul trouble early and SJU held a 22-20 lead after one. The Explorers' 20 points ties a season high in the first period.
- The first portion of the second stanza was a defensive battle with La Salle outscoring the Hawks, 4-3, through 5:30 of play. The Explorers ended the period with a 10-7 advantage, including an 8-2 run over the final 2:44 to give La Salle a 34-32 lead at the half. The 10 points La Salle gave up is the lowest the Explorers have allowed in a second quarter this season.
- In the third stanza, the teams traded baskets most of the way, with La Salle holding a 14-13 advantage at the end of the frame for a 48-45 lead.
- SJU started the final period with a 9-6 margin to tie the game at 54 with 4:41 remaining. The final minutes of the game saw five lead changes with the Hawks holding a 10-9 scoring edge.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Freshman Shayla Sweeney paced the team with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
- Junior Shalina Miller had an all-around game, scoring 12 points, corralling nine rebounds, blocking five shots, and handing out a career high four assists. Her five blocks tied her career best.
- Freshman Janay Sanders ended the day with 10 points, five assists, and four rebounds.
- Senior Jeryn Reese neared a double-double, adding 10 points and nine rebounds.
- Sophomore Michelle Nicholls drained 10 points on the afternoon.
- Collectively, the Explorers shot 41.7% (25-of-60), including 44.4% (4-of-9) from down town. La Salle outshot the Hawks from the floor and from long range.
- The Explorers handed out 18 assists against SJU, tying the team's season high.
GAME NOTES:
- Miller moves into fourth place in program history with 101 career blocks. She also put herself in third for the single season record with 52 deflections. The Philadelphia, Pa. native is two behind Amy Griffin (54) and three behind tying Linda French (55).

La Salle will have six days of rest before it is back in action. The Explorers will take on Richmond down in Virginia on Sunday at 2 p.m.
