RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a 32-22 advantage in the second half, the La Salle women's basketball team (4-24, 1-13 A-10) couldn't complete the comeback against Richmond (8-19, 5-9 A-10) on Sunday afternoon. The Spiders claimed the victory, 56-51.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- After La Salle scored the opening bucket of the game, Richmond responded with a 9-0 spurt that forced the Explorers to call a time out. The Spiders ended the remainder of the frame with an 11-7 push to hold a 20-9 lead.
- La Salle held Richmond scoreless through the first 3:23 of the second quarter, while taking a 6-0 run. The Spiders responded over the final 5:40 of the half with a 14-4 run to push their lead to 34-19.
- The first 5:03 of the third stanza was a defensive battle as both teams only scored four points apiece. La Salle closed the gap to seven points with an 8-0 run that lasted just over a minute. Richmond ended the stanza on top, 45-35.
- La Salle dropped the first five points of the fourth period, forcing a Richmond timeout with 8:07 left. The Explorers were able to pull within three, however the comeback bid fell short.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Senior Jeryn Reese and freshman Shayla Sweeney led the Explorers with 10 points each.
- Junior Shalina Miller added nine points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Miller needs just one block to tie the program single season record and two to break it.
- La Salle outrebounded the Spiders, 47-42.
- The Explorers held a six-point advantage in the paint, 28-22.
- Richmond's 22 points in the second half are tied for the least allowed by La Salle this season.
