Reese’s Double-Double and Team Defensive Effort Leads Women’s Basketball to Win at St. Bonaventure, 52-45

OLEAN, N.Y. – Senior Jeryn Reese notched her second career double-double with 10 points and a career high 16 rebounds as the La Salle women's basketball team (5-24, 2-13 A-10) took down St. Bonaventure (8-20, 5-10 A-10), 52-45, on Wednesday night for the team's first road win of the season.
 
The Explorers had their best defensive performance of the season, allowing a season low 45 points. La Salle tied the program single game record, which was set in the season opener against Howard, with 61 rebounds. The 61 boards included season highs 41 defensive rebounds and a +14 rebounding margin.
 
La Salle held the Bonnies to just 26.7% (16-of-60) from the floor, including 15% (3-of-20) from long range. SBU averaged 38.1% from the field heading into the game.
 
Junior Shalina Miller tied Linda French's 33-year-old single season block record with 55. Miller will have at least two more opportunities to break the record.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first frame was a defensive battle with St. Bonaventure holding just a 9-7 lead. The nine points allowed is tied for the team's season low in a first quarter.
  • La Salle won the second quarter, outscoring SBU 11-6 to hold an 18-15 lead at half. The Bonnies six points in the stanza is the lowest allowed by La Salle in a second quarter. The defensive effort in the first half led the Explorers to a season low 15 points allowed in a half this season.
  • Through the first 5:46 the teams traded baskets, scoring nine points each. SBU held a one-point advantage through the remainder of the period, outscoring La Salle, 9-8.
  • The Explorers continued to buckle down defensively in final quarter to pull out the win. La Salle outscored the Bonnies, 17-12, including six points from freshman Janay Sanders.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sanders led all scorers with 13 points. The rookie added a career high eight rebounds and four steals to her stat line.
  • Freshman Shayla Sweeney dropped eight points in the game.
  • Miller dropped six points and corralled 10 rebounds.
  • La Salle won the turnover battle, 12-15, for a +3 margin.
UP NEXT:
La Salle will host George Mason on Saturday for Senior Day, where the program will honor Reese and redshirt-junior Amber Wilks prior to the game. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m.
