Late Surge Comes Up Short for Men's Basketball in 62-60 Loss at St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, N.Y. - St. Bonaventure guard Kyle Lofton hit a go-ahead jumper with 3.1 seconds remaining to propel the Bonnies to a 62-60 win over the La Salle University men's basketball team in Atlantic 10 action at the Reilly Center on Wednesday. The Explorers had one final chance to tie or win the game, but a last-second play did not produce a field goal attempt and an official review of a potential clock malfunction confirmed the ruling on the floor that time had expired.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • La Salle trailed by 11 points just past the midway point of the second half, following a layup from LaDarien Griffin at the 9:13 mark.
  • After five straight points by the Explorers, including an old-fashioned three-point play from sophomore David Beatty, Lofton answered with a three-pointer that re-upped the home team's lead to 55-46 at the 7:09 mark.
  • Sophomore Miles Brookins and graduate student Pookie Powell converted consecutive layups to draw La Salle closer then, after another bucket by Lofton, Beatty connected on a three to put the score at 57-53 with 5:01 remaining.
  • Two free throws from Powell pulled the Explorers to within two, but SBU pushed its lead back to 60-55 thanks to a running layup by Osun Osunniyi.
  • Powell answered with a fadeaway jumper in the lane and junior Saul Phiri brought La Salle all the way back to even at 60-60 as he hit a three-pointer with 1:14 to go.
  • Both teams had empty possessions before Lofton connected on a 15-foot jumper at the left elbow to put the Bonnies on top by two with 3.1 remaining.
  • Following two timeouts, La Salle threw the ball the length of the floor but did not get a shot away before time expired. The officials went to the monitors to review the clock but did not put any time back on the clock and declared the game over.
  • The first half was played within a nine-point window, with neither team gaining an advantage larger than five.
  • Powell had 14 of his game-high 20 points in the period and junior Isiah Deas had eight, including a three-pointer that gave the Explorers a 28-23 lead with 3:56 on the clock.
  • St. Bonaventure closed the period scoring nine straight points, including five from Courtney Stockard, to head into the locker room with a 32-28 advantage.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
